UNHCR praises Turkey over Syria issue

The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) commended Turkey for the consistent protection extended to Syrians over the past two years. According to a statement by the Turkey branch of UNHCR, Turkey was supported and commended by UNHCR for its humanitarian efforts. The statement said, "Today, there are reportedly well over 300,000 Syrians receiving protection in Turkey. This represents a clear and continued demonstration of the commitment to the principles of international protection. UNHCR remains in close consultation with authorities on all protection related matters for all populations in Turkey seeking protection."

Moreover, UNHCR added, "Turkey has declared Temporary Protection for Syrians in need, implementing this policy through internally established procedures based on the principle of non-refoulement. UNHCR commends and supports the Government and the people of Turkey in these humanitarian efforts, and encourages the international community to extend increased assistance to Turkey and to all neighboring states so generously hosting Syrians. As the numbers continue to grow, so do the needs, and increased solidarity is critical to ensuring sustainable assistance efforts."

The statement underscored, "UNHCR as earlier stated was not present at the referred to repatriations. The Office continues to work in very close cooperation with the Government of Turkey including through the provision of technical advice and support and frequent observation of the voluntary repatriation procedures established by authorities for Syrians opting to return."

Touching on the Turkish Parliament's newly adopted draft law on foreigners and international protection, UNHCR said, "The Law on Foreigners and International Protection, adopted on 4 April 2013 by the Turkish Grand National Assembly, is a strong indicator of the continued commitment by the Republic of Turkey to the principles of international protection and humanitarianism. Turkey is no stranger to refugee flows, and this legal framework underscores the degree of dedication to advancing the rule of law with regard to the issue of asylum."
