AVRUPA TIMES (LONDON)-The Prime Minister has expressed his full agreement with the assessment of Rt. Hon Joan Ryan MP that the Kurdish community is playing a vital role in the fight against Daesh, in Iraq and Syria.
Ms Ryan had called on the Prime Minister to “acknowledge the courage, resilience and resourcefulness the Kurdish people have shown in the face of such an appalling terrorist group.”
Responding to the letter Ms Ryan wrote to the Prime Minister in December 2015, following the vote in Parliament to extend UK airstrikes against Daesh into Syria, David Cameron said the Kurds had shown “great courage and skill”. He also paid tribute to the dedication of the Peshmerga forces and the People’s Protection Units (YPGs) in supporting efforts to defeat Daesh.
Joan Ryan called on the UK Government to fully “engage with the Kurdish community in Iraq and Syria” and ensure the Kurds would be “made equal partners in the on-going talks with the International Syria Support Group, as we seek to secure a sustainable Syrian peace process.” The Prime Minister said “the Kurds will play a critical role in any political settlement in Syria.”
Joan Ryan MP, Labour’s Member of Parliament for Enfield North, said:
“I am very concerned about the situation of the Kurdish people across the Middle East.
It is very important that the sacrifices made by the Kurdish people are recognised, particularly when they are so often in the frontline against Daesh.
I am pleased that the Prime Minister has stated his commitment to support the Kurds and to ensure that they have a key role to play in helping to stabilise Syria.
I will continue to support all efforts both to build an enduring peace in the region and to recognise the Kurdish people’s rights.”
