The 2012-13 season is reaching its climax and Galatasaray rivals Fenerbahce failure to register a single point in Ankara against Genclerbirligi means that the league title is now almost certain to go to their Istanbul rivals. The Kadikoy outfit missed a string of chances before finally going down 2-0.
Fenerbahce no doubt had one eye on the 1st leg of their scheduled Europa League Semi-Final against Benfica and will be hoping for better luck than the last and only time when they previously played the Portuguese outfit. This was back in 1975 and Benfica were restructuring after their influential superstar Eusebio had just left the club. This did not stop Fenerbahce suffering what is to this day still, their heaviest defeat away in Europe when they lost 7-0.
Getting back to the Super Lig, Galatasaray enjoyed a 3-1 victory over Elazispor.
The Super Lig’s leading marksman Burak Yilmaz netted his 19th goal of the season after just 2 minutes. A rapid salvo of goals saw Galatasaray go 3-1 up inside the first 25 minutes with Drogba bagging a brace. Gurler replied for Elazispor.
The race for third place saw Bursa establish an important advantage as they won away in Antalya and Besiktas slipped up to a surprising 4-1 defeat away at Akhisar Belediye Genclik ve Spor.
The title this year takes on a major significance as both Istanbul teams are currently stuck on 18 league titles so Galatasaray can claim major bragging rights if they become the first Turkish team to reach the magical 19th title.
