Registration for the New Term Art, Language and Music Short Courses has started at Yunus Emre Institute in London!Yunus Emre Institute in London, introducing Turkish culture, language, and history to the UK, continues its courses in the new year without slowing down.Launching into the new year, Yunus Emre Institute in London is starting 2022 by increasing the number of courses they offer both online and face-to-face! For those who wish to learn a new branch of art, a new language, a new instrument or improve their existing skills, the dawn of a new year is the perfect time to get going. After a prolonged period of online courses and staying indoors, this is an exciting opportunity to try your hand at something new while socialising like ‘we used to’! With a wide selection of online options available, art and culture lovers from across the world are welcome to take part in Turkish language, art, and music classes. As course sizes are limited, students of all courses, both online and in-person, are offered intimate and lively classroom environments with one-to-one attention from the instructors who experts in their respective fields.

This year, course options include: Ney, Oud, Tezhip (Art of Illumination), Ebru (water marbling), Husni Hat (Calligraphy), Ottoman Turkish as well as Turkish language classes available on both weekdays and weekends.

Online Tezhip (Illumination) Courses

Tezhip, which means gilding and embellishment, has been used for decoration purposes, especially in manuscripts, for centuries. One of the most valued of Turkish and Islamic arts, our Tezhip courses will be conducted online by the artist Nagihan Seymour, who has been leading art courses in London for many years. There are two different course options available for those interested in the art of illumination: ‘Illumination for Beginners' and 'Rumi pattern and Halkar Painting in Illumination'.
Tezhip for Beginners course will take place online on Mondays, 14th February – 7th March 2022, 6-8 pm (UK Time). The 4-week course costs £150 (materials excluded). 
Rumi Pattern & Halkar Painting in Illumination will take place online on Tuesdays, 15th February – 8th March 2022, 6-8 pm (UK Time). The 4-week course costs £150 (materials excluded). 
Calligraphy Courses
The art of calligraphy, with its aesthetic beauty, is a centuries old branch of art that decorates the pages of books, the walls of homes and monumental places alike to leave a deep impression on all that see it. The practice of writing letters of Arabic origin beautifully, it is commonly said that the Qur'an revealed to Mecca, was recited in Egypt, and was written in Istanbul. 
Calligraphy lessons will be given face-to face by Gulnaz Fatima Mahboob, a student of Hasan Çelebi, one of the greatest living calligraphers of Istanbul where these most beautiful calligraphic pieces were written. In this course, students will focus on the Nesih script, also known as the Holy Quran script, a using traditional materials and traditional methods.
The face-to-face Calligraphy Course will be led by Gulnaz Fatima Mahboob and will take place on Saturdays, 11 am – 2 pm (UK Time), 5th February – 26th March 2022. The 8-week course costs £285 (materials included) 
In the online calligraphy course, students will have the chance to learn from international award-winning calligrapher Nuria Garcia Masip! In the course, which will focus on Sülüs, a variation of calligraphy,which means beautiful writing.  This interactive course will teach basic principles including the history of Islamic Calligraphy and the materials used will be taught.
 The online Calligraphy Course will be led by Nuria Garcia Masip and will take place on Thursdays, 6-8 pm (UK time), 27th January – 31st March 2022. The 8-week course costs £190 (materials excluded). 


Ottoman Turkish Courses
Ottoman Turkish was the direct predecessor of modern Turkish and was used in large geography outside of Turkey that used to form a part of the Ottoman Empire. The online courses to be run by historian Dr. Cumhur Bekar will be opened in two different levels: 'Ottoman Turkish for Beginners' and 'Advanced Ottoman Turkish'.
The 8-week online Ottoman Turkish for Beginners course will take place on Fridays, 4th February – 25th March 2022, 6:00 – 8:00 pm (UK Time). This 8-week course costs £125. 
The 8-week online Ottoman Turkish for Advanced Levels will take place on Saturdays, 5th February-26th March, 2:00 – 4:00 pm (UK Time). This 8-week course costs £125. 
Ney Course
Ney, one of the oldest musical instruments in history, is one of the essential instruments of Classical Turkish Music and Sufi music with its sad and soul-touching sound. This term, the ney player Murat Ferhat Yegül will be given online and face-to-face by the famous musician Jan Hendrickse in the ney courses that provide education with both online and face-to-face options. This term, talented musicians Murat Ferhat Yegül and Jan Hendrickse who will separately offer online and face-to-face options. Open to people of all levels, the instructors will guide their students step-by-step on how to play this enchanted instrument for 8 weeks.
Working with Neyzen Murat Ferhat Yegül, classes will be held in 30-minute one-to-one slots online at times agreed with the student and the instructor, between 4th February-25th March 2022. This 8-week course costs £160. 
Oud Course
If you want to learn the 'ud', a large-bodied, short-necked, fretless stringed instrument, this is an opportunity not to be missed! Students of all levels will be able to attend the one-to-one lessons given by Oud master Baha Yetkin, as well as be given the opportunity to offer face-to-face or online lessons. Students who do not have an oud will be able to rent it from the Institute. Within the course, basic music theories, practices and maqams used in Turkish music will be taught alongside the oud’s practical application.
 Oud classes will be held in 30-minute one-to-one slots online at times agreed with the student and the instructor, between 21th January-11th March 2022. This 8-week course costs £210.  
Paper Marbling (Ebru) Course
Ebru, which emerged as the art of decorating the inside covers of books and turned into an independent art today, has become one of the most popular traditional Turkish arts. In these courses, which will be given by the marbling artist Merve Kurt, students will learn about the art of marbling while creating different and unique patterns with natural paints sprinkled on the water surface from the tip of the brush.
