Neo conservatism and Neo liberalism in Turkey

 “Politics of the Intimate: Gender Equality Policies at the Intersection of Neo-conservatism and Neo-liberalism in Turkey.” This event will take place on Monday, 28 January 2013 from 6pm to 8pm at Room COW1.11, First Floor, Cowdray House, LSE.   

Feride Acar is a Professor of political sociology in the Department of Political Science and Public Administration of Middle East Technical University, Ankara. She has received her Ph.D in political sociology from Bryn Mawr College, Pa., USA. Her research interests are political sociology, gender studies and women’s human rights. Professor Acar is a recognized international expert on gender and women’s human rights issues. She has been a member (1997-2005, 2011-) and former Chairperson (2003-2005) of the UN Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW). She has also represented Turkey on the international fora on many occasions, including the UN 4th World Conference on Women (1995), the drafting of the Optional Protocol to CEDAW (2000-2001), and most recently in the committee that prepared the “Council of Europe Convention to Prevent and Combat Violence against Women and Domestic Violence (Istanbul Convention)” (2009-2011).
