On 21 November 2024, Yunus Emre Institute London hosted an engaging event featuring Nicholas Mackey, in collaboration with Unicorn Publishing as part of the Institute’s Arts and Culture Lecture Series. The evening marked the launch of Mackey’s latest book, An Irishman in Northern Mesopotamia: A Journey of Discovery in South-east Türkiye: A Personal Perspective.
Mackey guided the audience through the rich cultural and historical landscapes of south-east Türkiye, sharing stories from his travels to ancient cities like Antakya, Dara, Harran, Mardin, Gaziantep, and Diyarbakir. He brought iconic sites such as Göbeklitepe and Karahan Tepe to life, offering insights into the history and archaeology of this region known as the cradle of civilization. Through his personal reflections and stunning visuals, Mackey provided a thoughtful and heartfelt perspective on the region’s significance.
In addition to highlighting key archaeological sites, Mackey discussed how his journey revealed the evolving narratives surrounding early human settlements. He delved into the reinterpretation of landmarks like Göbeklitepe and Karahan Tepe, which challenge existing theories on the origins of agriculture, architecture, and organized society. These insights, paired with Mackey’s first-hand observations, added depth to the evening and allowed attendees to appreciate the historical and cultural significance of his findings.
Guests had the opportunity to purchase Mackey’s book during the event and have it personally signed by the author, adding a special memento to the evening. What made this even more meaningful was the knowledge that proceeds from the book sales were dedicated to supporting recovery efforts for communities affected by the devastating February 2023 earthquake in Türkiye. By purchasing the book, attendees not only gained an in-depth exploration of south-east Türkiye’s cultural and historical treasures but also played a role in helping rebuild lives in the region. This initiative allowed guests to connect with the event on a deeper level, blending the joy of discovery with the act of giving back to a community in need.
This event provided a detailed look at the rich history and cultural narratives of south-east Türkiye, inviting attendees to engage with the stories and discoveries that make this region so unique.
