New British citizenship test

WORLD

Changes to the Life InThe UK test were announced today.

Immigrants will have to know about the nation's culture and history if they want to become British citizens. The revised Life in the UK test will include various aspects of British life as sport, music and history. The new test focus on the "values and principles at the heart of being British" the Home Office has said. Foreign nationals who wish to become UK citizens need to have a score of 75% from 24 questions will be a pass. A citizenship test introduced under the former Labour government seven years ago and asked some practical questions about daily life, the emphasis is now firmly on British history and culture. There are questions on sports, music and historical figures from William Shakespeare to Winston Churchill.

The Home Office said the revised exam will be introduced in March, and will focus less on the daily living in Britain and more on the nation's culture, with topics such as sport, music and key historical facts.

More than 150,000 Life in the UK tests were taken nationally last year, including 77,000 in London.
