Israel forcing Palestinians into spying

Israeli Internal Security Agency, Shin Bet, has developed new methods to gather information about the Palestinian resistance and to use Palestinians as informants, a Palestinian security official claimed. Muhammed Lafi, a lieutenant colonel with Internal Security Service of the Palestinian National Authority in Gaza, said Shin Bet tried to disguise its recruitment efforts by showing them as charity work and research work to garner informants from among Palestinian families whose members have been imprisoned or killed. Lafi said Shin Bet used all means possible to force Palestinians into spying, adding that the disclosure of its older spying methods by had pushed them to improvise new techniques.

Saying that prior to 2005 Israel blackmailed Palestinians with their inappropriate photos, Lafi said, "Israel no longer uses such methods. These days, Israel threatens the sick and the disabled Palestinians, saying they won't be allowed to leave the country for medical treatment unless they cooperated."

Stating that the number of spies were reducing in Gaza, Lafi said the Hamas government had a full list of informants and were preparing to detain them unless they turned themselves in by April 11, the deadline until which Palestinians accused of spying for Israel could appeal for amnesty.
