Sony Unveils the PlayStation 4

New York, Sony Computer Entertainment, as expected, unveiled the PlayStation 4 console system at their “PlayStationMeeting 2013″ event held in New York City today.

The next-generation console will be available "Holiday 2013″ but no pricing or specific units were announced during the event. Instead, Sony showcased the power of the system, developers (big and small) who will release PS4 titles and gave a good amount of insight into the capabilities of the PlayStation 4 (PS4) system. The first individual to come out was none other than Andrew House, President and Group CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment. He officially announced that the new console system will indeed be named the PlayStation 4 to an audience, estimated to be in the millions, streaming in to watch the announcement. Our vision for the future is consumer-centric, developer-inspired, and characterized by an unwavering commitment to phenomenal play experiences," House remarked. "Today we are revealing the genesis of an expanding 'idea' about the future of play – an idea with enough potential to satisfy the insatiable appetites of our creative community of developers and gamers."

The second person to take the stage was game designer Mark Cerny who discussed the design and development of the PS4 and gave some details about the hardware, but not enough to fully discern all the specifications of the units. Cerny revealed that the processor is x86 based (8 core) and that there will be a top flight desktop-worthy GPU integrated into the system. Also revealed is that the PlayStation 4 will have 8GB of integrated memory and feature a traditional storage device. Specifics on the processor, GPU, hard drive and other technologies were not revealed during the press conference.
