HEALTH

the largest year on year decrease in the borough since the national teenage pregnancy strategy was launched in 2000.

The under 18 conception rate for 2011 in Hackney and the City was 30.7 per thousand females aged 15-17 years, which is in line with the national average for England. A reduction of 40.7 per cent was observed in the local rate when compared with the previous year and a reduction of 60.2 per cent was observed compared with the 1998 baseline.

128 conceptions were recorded in Hackney & the City during 2011. This compares with 170 in 2010 and 273 in 1998.

Cllr Rita Krishna, Hackney Council Cabinet Member for Children's Services, said: "These figures show that more and more young people in Hackney are showing maturity and responsibility for their own sexual health with support from our local health and education services."

Hackney's work to reduce teenage pregnancy rates includes improved sex education guidance in schools; and providing safe sex advice, including handing out condoms to young people via pharmacies, youth services and clinics.
