Sufficient salt stocks are available to grit highway routes and footpaths, with reserves available as we start to use our stock. We will also use our street cleaning resources to provide 24 hour winter maintenance arrangements to clear footpaths during freezing weather conditions. In most cases we grit priority footpaths such as entrances to hospitals, schools, public buildings, rail stations and within markets where the surface has become slippery.
For snow clearance we grit footpaths on priority routes in the borough - high streets and town centres - as well as gritting and clearing snow from residential roads. This is carried out by the Council's waste services staff using nearly 70 vehicles, including 40 pedestrian operated vehicles.
